Essential Oil Profile: Sacred Frankincense

August 20, 2010 in  by Evelyn Vincent for The Very Essence Blog

Young Living has recently established 3 Frankincense oil distilleries in Oman, where they are distilling our newest essential oil, Sacred Frankincense (Boswellia sacra). The species of Frankincense Young Living has carried for years is Boswellia carteri, which comes from Somalia.

Omani frankincense is regarded the world over as the rarest, most sought-after aromatic in existence. After careful negotiations with Omani officials, Gary Young was granted permission to build a Young Living distillery in-country, and take the resulting essential oil out of Oman. Until this partnership, no Omani frankincense had ever left the country, unless directly purchased by Saudi royals.

Sacred Frankincense is highly regarded as the frankincense of the ancients and the traditional spiritual oil of biblical times. Young Living’s Sacred Frankincense marks the first time any Westerners have been able to experience these unique, spiritual properties.

The Frankincense from Oman is Boswellia sacra, and this has just been released by Young Living in the USA (and will soon be available in Australia) under the name of “Sacred Frankincense”. The Frankincense oil from Boswellia sacra is the rarest and most sought-after aromatic in existence, originally only available to royalty. Young Living is the only company exporting Boswellia sacra oil from Oman.

Frankincense Fact Sheets

Sacred Frankincense (Boswellia sacra) fact sheet

Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) fact sheet

From Dr. Suhail, M.D. at the 2010 YL Convention

Cancer, arthritis and periodontal disease are also relatively unknown in Oman and Yemen because the population has access to luban (frankincense resin), which is chewed like gum. They also soak 4 or 5 pieces of this resin in water overnight and drink the water. Dr. Suhail, M.D. siad that they don’t even have a cancer ward in the hospital that he visits in Oman because so few people over there have cancer. He only knows of 4 cancer cases, all 4 cases being non-local people.

Differences Between Boswellia carteri (Frankincense) and Boswellia sacra (Sacred Frankincense)

There are 3 major classes of chemicals in Frankincense oil that appear to be responsible for its anti-cancerous action – the alpha pinenes, boswellic acids, and incensol.

Boswellia sacra (Sacred Frankincense) has fewer compounds in it than Boswellia carteri (regular Frankincense). In Sacred Frankincense, its alpha pinenes are 80.72%, compared with 52.64% in Boswellia carteri. The incensol in both species differs too (incensol is a heavier molecule, which is only captured with 15+ hours of distillation) is 0.82% in Boswellia sacra, compared with 0.4% in Boswellia carteri.

The higher alpha pinenes give Sacred Frankincense a more spiritual purpose. Alpha pinenes can also soften the cell walls (that in cancer cells have tended to become shell-like and thus resistant to treatment).

Gary Young also shared his personal belief that incensol (which is in higher proportions in Sacred Frankincense) will be very powerful for degenerative diseases. In contrast. Gary also suggested that Boswellia carteri would be the oil of choice to help the immune system, having a stronger effect on the immune system than Sacred Frankincense.

Sacred Frankincense Study

A short term study of the effects of Sacred Frankincense before, during and after 30 days of use involving 12 subjects:

  • Learning blockages improved in 67%
  • Reading difficulties improved in 63%
  • Memory problems improved in 80%
  • Motivation issues improved in 33%

When asked if “uses of Sacred Frankincense lead to significant changes in your life?”, 80% said “yes”. Subjects said:

  • Before use brain felt full
  • After the first use felt alive
  • At end of study – easier to remember

Sacred Frankincense can help heal trauma, induce inner calm, reduce inner noise, ensure brain’s gifts and talents are more available. Two percent of brain activity is neuron firing; 98% is neuro-peptide release.

More Frankincense Research

  • Summary of latest research papers that were mentioned at 2010 convention:
  • Cancer starts when the DNA code becomes corrupted. Frankincense oil acts as a cellular re-set button. So it’s not surprising that Frankincense oil is being extensively researched for its ability to repair DNA. In one particular study on DNA repair capacity, Frankincense out-performed all other essential oils used in that study, and had a DNA repair capacity of 45%, compared with the next highest oils which were Hyssop at 43%, and Balsam Fir at 36%.
  • Frankincense oil has also been documented to regenerate disc, cartilage and bone.
  • Therapeutic-grade Frankincense oil contains Boswellic Acids, which are potent anti-inflammatory agents, and which researchers are considering to be a future replacement for steroid treatment. Steroids are caustic to life and the body itself, damaging the thyroid and parathyroid, and damaging to the immune system. Frankincense on the other hand has no negative side effects.
  • One study showed that Boswellic Acids were able to protect against hepatitis, and were able to reduce serum cholesterol (the bad cholesterol – LDL) by approx. 38%
  • Another study showed how Boswellic acids in Frankincense oil induces apoptosis (cell death) in leukemia cells.
  • The University of Oklahoma concluded that Frankincense may treat bladder cancer.
  • Frankincense has also been used for all kinds of arthritis, chest infection, Crohn’s disease, colitis and asthma.

A note from Gary Young on Frankincense during 2008:

Over the past five weeks I have traveled around the world one and a quarter times, visited 11countries, experienced 36 hours of time zone changes, and took 30 flights to see our oil in production and meet with some of our partners in growing and distilling essential oils. They appreciate my personal visits and I had the opportunity to spend much time with them. They have great admiration for the mission of Young Living and respect for my 27 years in the industry.

A highlight of the recent trip was inspecting frankincense sources. We traveled to Nairobi, Kenya, where I was able to introduce Marc Schreuder and Mary Lou Jacobsen to our frankincense suppliers. The final leg of our journey brought us to Oman – home to the famed Frankincense Trail. There we were privileged to explore the historical route and felt blessed to traverse such sacred ground.

Interestingly, some companies claim they are purchasing frankincense harvested in Oman, but if they would travel there themselves, they would discover that frankincense is not commercially harvested in Oman and there are no frankincense distilleries currently in operation there. Upon talking with Omani resin brokers, they explained that the resin they export commercially is harvested in Somalia and Ethiopia and then shipped to England for distillation. Mary and I send love and appreciation to all, ~ Gary Young

Did You Know…

Researchers have discovered that the sesquiterpenes in frankincense help stimulate the limbic system of the brain (the center of emotions) as well as the hypothalamus, pineal and pituitary glands. The hypothalamus is the master gland of the human body, controlling the release of many hormones including thyroid and growth hormone.

Frankincense is being researched and used therapeutically in European hospitals and is being investigated for its ability to improve human growth hormone production. Today, frankincense is still used worldwide for both its ceremonial and medicinal use.

How the Consumer Can Determine Superior Quality Essential Oils

Frankincense is a commonly adulterated oil. Frankincense resin that is sold in Somalia costs between $30,000 and $35,000 per ton. A great deal of time, 12 hours or more, is required to properly steam distill this essential oil from the resin, making it very expensive.

Frankincense oil that sells for $25 per ounce or less is invariably distilled with gum resins, alcohol or other solvents, which is a cheaper process, but leaves the essential oil laden with harmful chemicals.

Sadly, when these cut, synthetic, and adulterated oils cause rashes, burns, or other irritations, people wonder why they do not get the benefit they expected and conclude that essential oils do not have much value.

I can always determine the quality of a company’s essential oils by looking at the label on their Frankincense oil – if it states “Not For Internal Use” – I know they make junk oils… Frankincense is edible when it is handled properly.

Ways to Use Sacred Frankincense

  • Diffuse – For up to one hour daily. Good for congestion and voice loss, calming to the mind, reduce mental strain, cultivate internal peace, and place past obsessive states into perspective.Diffuse this oil while practicing yoga, meditation, or prayer to deepen your experience and feel a connection to ancient traditions. More on Diffusers and Diffusing
  • Massage – Blend 4 drops Sacred Frankincense with 1 TBSP V-6 Massage Oil. More on massage and bodywork
  • Bath – Mix 4 drops Sacred Frankincense with 1 cup Epsom Salts or Sea Salt in a small dish, add to running bath water, soak for 20 minutes. This is good for circulatory support, respiratory support, exhaustion, and nightmares. It also has a good astringent effect on the skin; perks up older, more mature skin; and may assist the body in healing itself of wounds, sores, and ulcers.
  • Creams and Lotions – Sacred Frankincense can be added to a base cream or lotion to help with general skin tone and condition while reducing oily skin, rejuvenating more mature skin, and at the same time helping wounds, ulcers, and sores heal.
  • Wash or Use as a Compress – To assist the body in healing and to lessen the appearance of scars from wounds, add a few drops of Sacred Frankincense to the water when washing a wound. For other applications, apply diluted oil directly onto the affected area or use as a compress. More on essential oil compresses
  • Wear as a Perfume
  • Inhale – directly from the bottle or place one drop on palm, rub palms together, cup palms over the nose and inhale deeply thrree times
  • Dietary Supplement – Put two drops in a capsule. Take three times daily or as needed.
  • Topical – Apply 2–4 drops directly to desired area. Dilution not required, except for the most sensitive skin. Use as needed.
  • Chakra – Use on Chakra points. More on aromatherapy and Chakras
  • Meditation, Yoga, Prayer – Frankincense has a long history of use during spiritual practice, Sacred Frankincese is perfect for enhancing your practice. More on aromatherapy for Yoga, meditation and prayer

Gary Young on the Frankincense Trail

For thousands of years, frankincense was transported across the most desolate wilderness on earth: the Empty Quarter. This vast desert covers some 250,000 square miles and spans part of Oman, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

I grew up in an Idaho wilderness area, packing horses and mules and traveling across treacherous terrain. So it wasn’t so difficult for me to understand life on a camel caravan, as rugged men left their homes and loved ones to take their precious cargo of frankincense and myrrh north to market.

To travel with a caravan was a dangerous and sometimes deadly occupation. The desert itself could be a vicious opponent with violent sandstorms that could change the landscape, covering precious waterholes, creating huge new dunes and possibly burying a caravan. There were poisonous snakes and scorpions as well. But the most dangerous adversary of all came on two legs: robbers, thieves, and marauders determined to steal the resins worth more than gold.

I have walked and driven over the majority of the frankincense trails that brought the prized resins from southern Arabia to the ports of Gaza, Alexandria, and Damascus. I have such an appreciation for the rugged men who risked their lives to bring such a treasure to the world. That same spirit of adventure has inspired me to bring the very best frankincense and myrrh to today’s seeker of physical and emotional wellness.

Harvesting Sacred Frankincense

The process of collecting frankincense happens two times a year – once in the spring (March to May) and then in the fall (September to October). To harvest the resin, you have to take a little axe and chop the hardened resin crystals off the branches – but there’s a process that comes in the week before that.

To begin the process, you cut the bark of the frankincense tree and then it allows the liquid resin to ooze out onto the external part. Then, when it hits the oxygen, it starts to crystallize and harden. Naturally, the longer it is left on the tree, the longer it is present in the oxygen and the harder it gets. It takes about a week before you can actually come back and cut it off as a hardened resin crystal. So this is a week to two-week process from when you go in and you cut the tree to when you come back and collect the crystal resin. Then the crystal resin goes into the distillery where it is crushed into powder, put into an oil bath, and steam distilled to extract the oil from the crystal resin.

This process produces different types of frankincense resins. The one that is very white is called Hojari. Now, when I was collecting frankincense years ago and they said “Hojari,” I thought they were being very friendly and saying, “How, Gary?” And I said, “With an axe.” But this was Hojari. There are actually five grades of frankincense resin. The first grade is brownish resin. It has a lot of bark particles in it, and that’s very commonly used because there’s more of it available. But the Hojari is what was selected just for the kings and queens because it was the purest of the frankincense. Essentially Yours, Gary Young

12 Oils of the Bible-Frankincense-Part 1

March 20, 2010 in Allergies, Anxiety, Aromatherapy, Aromatherapy Perfume, Biblical Oils, Depression, Essential Oil Collections, First Aid tips, Frankincense, Immune System, Stress by Jonell Elder | No comments

If you are a reader of the Bible, you know that essential oils are mentioned many times throughout.  The Bible has more than 500 references to at least 33 species of essential oils and/or the herbs from which they are distilled.  All of the oils used by the people of Bible times are still used today, although not always for the same purposes.

FRANKINCENSE

Is mentioned in the Bible 22 times, the most familiar of which is regarding the gifts to the baby Jesus from the wise men. Mary and Joseph would have known, without any explanation from the wise men that it was customary to anoint newborn sons of kings and priests with the oil of frankincense, which they no doubt did for their newborn child.

Also known as “olibanum,” or “Oil from Lebanon” the name frankincense is derived from the Medieval French word for “real incense.” Frankincense is considered the “holy anointing oil” in the Middle East and has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. It was well known during the time of Christ for its anointing and healing powers and was one of the gifts given to Christ at His birth.

“Used to treat every conceivable ill known to man,” frankincense was valued more than gold during ancient times, and only those with great wealth and abundance possessed it. It is mentioned in one of the oldest known medical records, Ebers Papyrus (dating from sixteenth century BC) an ancient Egyptian list of 877 prescriptions and recipes.

Matthew 2:11—“And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.”

Scriptures: Exodus 30:34,; Leviticus 2:1, 1, 15, 16: 5:11; 6:15; 24:7, Numbers 5:15; 16:46-50 (Arron stops a plague); 1 Chronicles 9:29; Nehemiah 13:5, 9; Song of Solomon 3:6; 4:6, 14; Isaiah 59:20; 60:3, 6 (These verses from Isaiah prophesy the gifts of the wise men) Isaiah 66:3; Jeremiah 6:20; 17:26; 41:5 (NOTE: these six references from Isaiah and Jeremiah, are translated as “incense” in the King James Version.  However, the Hebrew in all cases is “lebonah: which is frankincense.  Matthew 2:11 (Three wise men’s visit) Revelations 18:13

Frankincense was considered a cure-all by the people of Biblical times and for those who could afford it, it was applied to cuts, bruises, and wounds of all kinds, as well as a inhaled and taken internally. Frankincense comes from a tree requiring a very unique desert climate. It grows only in North Africa and the Southern Arabian peninsula. The oil received by Jesus as a baby came from the same areas where Young Living gets it’s Frankincense today.

Not only was frankincense used as a holy anointing oil, it was also one of the ingredients in the holy incense of the Hebrews (Exodus 30:34-37) burned perpetually in their tabernacles for more than a thousand years, through the time of Christ. Today one can still experience the fragrance of Frankincense in Catholic Churches where it has been customarily diffused for more than 2000 years.

While it has been used to treat every conceivable ill known to man for thousands of years, modern experience has shown that the fragrance of frankincense is an antidepressant and helps in overcoming stress and despair, as well as supporting the immune system. It has also been found helpful with allergies, insect and snake bites, bronchitis, cancer, pneumonia, diphtheria, headaches, hemorrhaging, high blood pressure, typhoid, and warts.

Frankincense has always been a popular fragrance for perfumes and lotions, from ancient times to the present. In fact, it is found in several modern products, including Youth Dew® (Estee Lauder) and the all-time best-selling after-shave lotion, Old Spice® (Shulton).

Egyptian tradition says that “Frankincense is good for everything from gout to a broken head” or in other words “good from head to toe”.  If in doubt, use Frankincense.

Wood from Frankincense and Myrrh was burned by tribes for warmth and cooking. They received benefits of oil vapors through the smoke and were blessed with the healing power of the vapors.

Source: Oleo-gum-resin from the trunks and limbs of the tree.

Ancient Uses:

Holy Anointing Oil, a cure-all used to enhance meditation and elevate spiritual  consciousness, thought to assist one in the transition of death, used for embalming, and perfume.   Frankincense was used to anoint the new born sons of kings and priests, which may have been why it was brought to the baby Jesus.

Abundance Essential Oil Aftershave Recipe

January 19, 2010 in Application, Aromatherapy, Aromatherapy Perfume, Best Essential Oils, Cinnamon Oil, Clove, Frankincense, How do I use, Inspirational, Make My Own, Men’s Health, Mind / Body / Soul, Natural, Orange Oil, Recipes, Skin Care, Using Essential Oils, Young Living Essential Oils by Evelyn Vincent | 1 comment

This recipe is a terrific example of why I enjoy using Young Living Essential Oils. Not only do we have a super easy recipe here to make our own aftershave for the man in our life, but it’s completely free of all of those horrible chemicals found in commercial aftershave products. Abundance comes into our lives in many forms. It can be though financial gain, harmonious family life, helpful people, gratefulness, happiness and so much more. Consider what you need more of in your life and allow it to manifest. This recipe would also make a lovely Valentine’s Day gift for the special man in your life.

Herbalist and YL essential oil lover Carole Brown created this aftershave recipe for her husband. She states that since he has been using this he is making more money than when he first started. Many others also have similar experiences using the blend Abundance.

Abundance Aftershave Recipe

You’ll need:

  • 50 % Brandy (Korbel Brand)
  • 50% Distilled Water
  • Several drops of Abundance Essential Oil Blend
  • Spray bottle

Put all ingredients into a spray bottle for use after shaving. Note: avoid getting spray in eyes.

This blend is also nice for women too, apply a drop to wrists and each side of the neck as a perfume. Diffuse Abundance for 30-45 minutes a day, or rub a couple drops on the soles of your feet. Find more of my articles on ways we use YL essential oils.

About the Blend Abundance

Abundance is a blend of therapeutic-grade essential oils created by Gary Young to help increase the attraction of abundance and success. Abundance helps shift the dominant frequency of the energy field. This frequency is thought to create the “law of attraction,” a harmonic magnetic energy field around oneself.

When focusing on issues of abundance and inhaling Abundance essential oil, a memory link to the RNA template is created where memory is blueprinted and permanently transcribed (more on olfactory).

Abundance contains the following therapeutic-grade essential oils:

  • Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) possesses the frequency of wealth according to legends and is referenced throughout the Old and New Testaments (“A bundle of myrrh is my well beloved unto me…” Song of Solomon 1:13). It was also part of a formula the Lord gave to Moses (Exodus 30:22-27). It was used traditionally in the royal palaces by the queens during pregnancy and birthing.
  • Cinnamon Bark (Cinnamomum verum) is the oil of wealth from the Orient and part of the formula the Lord gave to Moses (Exodus 30:22- 27). It was regarded by the emperors of China and India to have great value; their wealth was measured by the amount of oil they possessed. It was believed to attract wealth and abundance. (more on Cinnamon Bark)
  • Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) was valued more than gold during ancient times, and only those with great wealth and abundance possessed it. It is considered a holy anointing oil in the Middle East and has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. Frankincense contains sesquiterpenes which stimulate and elevate the mind, overcoming stress and despair. (more on Frankincense)
  • Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) is used by East Indians to fragrance their clothing and homes to attract abundance. Legends say that patchouli represented money and those who possessed it were considered wealthy. It is also relaxing and helps clarify thoughts.
  • Orange (Citrus sinensis) brings joy, security, peace, and happiness to those who possess it. (a study on Orange and Lavender)
  • Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) is an oil from the Orient associated with great abundance; those who possessed it were considered wealthy.
  • Ginger (Zingiber officinale) was highly prized in ancient times. It amplifies the law of attraction.
  • Spruce (Picea mariana) was traditionally believed to possess the frequency of prosperity. Helps relieve emotional blocks bringing about a sense of balance.

Enhancing the Powers of Abundance Further…

Use the blend Release first to release emotions that prevent us from receiving abundance. Then, follow with one of these blends: Acceptance, Believe, Envision, Into the Future, Joy, Magnify Your Purpose, Motivation or Valor.

As you can see, bringing essential oils and the Abundance blend into your mans life, and yours too, can be useful in many more ways than simple aromatherapy. Enjoy!

The A to Z of Essential Oils for Emotional Response

January 17, 2010 in Alternative Therapies, Aromatherapy, Best Essential Oils, Depression, Emotional Release, Frankincense, Lavender, Lemon, Men’s Health, Mind / Body / Soul, Natural Health, Peppermint, Rosemary, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Thyme, Using Essential Oils, Young Living Essential Oils by Evelyn Vincent | No comments

Excerpted from one of our most valuable resouces for using Young Living Essential Oils, the Essential Oils Desk Reference

Today, we live in a society of emotional turmoil.  There is more focus on emotional behavior and psychological conditions of the body now than at any time in our history. Many doctors are recognizing the possibility that a number of diseases are caused by emotional problems that link back to infancy or even to problems that occurred during conception or while in the womb. These emotional problems may have compromised the immune system or genetic structuring, causing children to become allergic to something that the mother ingested while pregnant.

Essential oils play an important role in assisting people in getting beyond these emotional barriers.  The aldehydes and esters of certain essential oils are very calming and sedating to the central nervous system (which consists of both the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems). These substances allow us to relax instead of letting anxiety build up in our body. Anxiety creates an acidic condition that activates the transcript enzyme that transcribes that emotion on the RNA template (RNA is the sister molecule of DNA) and stores it in the DNA. That emotion then becomes a predominant factor in our lives from that moment on.

When we have an emotional situation come up, instead of being overwhelmed by it, we can diffuse the oils, put them in our bath, or wear them as cologne. The oil molecules will absorb into the bloodstream from the nasal and buccal cavity to the limbic system [more on olfactory]. They will activate the amygdala (the memory center for fear and trauma) and sedate and relax the sympathetic/parasympathetic system. The oils help support the body in minimizing the acid that is created so that it does not create a reaction with the transcript enzyme.

Because essential oils affect the amygdala and pineal gland in the brain, they can help the mind and body by releasing emotional traumas and sharpening focus.

Essential oils provide assistance with staying centered in our goals. People have many distractions in today’s fast-paced world. For example, if you are struggling to retain or remember information, breathing the essential oils of peppermint, or rosemary stimulate the brain and memory functions for better focus and concentration.  Someone who is focusing on creating a business but finds other problems that interfere with that focus, could breathe the essential oils of galbanum, frankincense, sandalwood and/or melissa. These oils are extremely beneficial in enabling a person to bring his or her mind into a center of focus. The blend Gathering will also bring focus to people’s minds. For emotional clearing and release, the essential oil blend Trauma Life is especially helpful.

Frankincense Essential Oil by Gary Young

January 15, 2010 in Application, Aromatherapy, Diffusing, Essential Oils, Frankincense, Gary Young, How do I use, Mind / Body / Soul, Skin Care, Therapeutic-grade Essential Oil, Using Essential Oils, Young Living Distributor by Evelyn Vincent | No comments

Young Living Frankincense essential oil is one of my favorites. I particularly enjoy using it as part of my anti-wrinkle regime (gently apply 2 drops to my face) and top with Boswellia Wrinkle Cream.

One particular morning I arose from bed in a city called Salalah in southern Arabia. I’ll never forget the excitement that was in my heart as I realized that morning that Mary and I were going to travel into the mountains in eastern Oman to see, to feel, to touch, to experience the magnificence of the greatest storied tree in world history: the frankincense tree.

The excitement grew as I thought about when we would journey into the empty quarter to see the city of Od, now referred to as the lost city of Ubar-the Atlantis of the desert. A city where the trade of frankincense and myrrh and balsam took place; where fine linens and silks came across the Silk Road from China, Tibet, and India and journeyed all the way into Southern Arabia to trade for the precious ointments and the precious resins of frankincense and myrrh. A commodity that was so wealthy that the kings prized their wealth upon the volume of this great ointment and resin that they possessed. That the newborn kings and queens were anointed with these precious oils. Why? Why were these such praised and sought-after commodities?

As I stood at the foot of a frankincense tree looking up into the branches, I realized that I was touching a tree that produced a resin that could be distilled into an oil with which the Christ child may have been anointed with; an oil that was anciently regarded as being more valuable than gold; and one of the most powerful natural healing substances known. Trader ships from Sri Lanka, India, China, Japan, Egypt, and various ports of the world brought spices, linens, gold, and silver to make the journey to the lost city of Ubar to trade for the precious ointments. We read in Exodus that these substances were regarded as very special, very sacred elements:

“And the Lord said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices spectate and galbanum, these sweet spices with pure frankincense of each there should be a like weight. And thou shall make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together pure and holy. And thou shall beat some of it very small and put it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation where I will meet with thee. It shall be unto you most holy.’”

Frankincense was anciently associated with longevity. For instance: In the tales of Alexander’s adventures in India at the oracle of the sun and the moon, the Indian guardians of the oracle lived in a bower of sacred trees, which wafted the aroma of frankincense and balsam. They lived on pure water, balsam [now believed to be extinct], and frankincense; a diet on which they had thrived for 300 years.

Legend also tells about Adam having been given gold, frankincense, and myrrh by God as a consolation for having lost paradise. According to the legends, he hid these gifts safely high in the mountains where they were treasured by Noah after the waters of the flood had receded. These sacred gifts were said to be passed down from generation to generation and kept carefully until the time came that they were to be brought to the newborn Jesus.

As early as 2800 BC, frankincense was carried either north to Mesopotamia or west to the Red Sea. There it was loaded on boats bound for Egypt where it was valued as an offering worthy of the gods. The Egyptian Book of the Dead considered incense far more than a ceremonial trapping. Frankincense was believed to enhance the afterlife journey of the deceased using the words of the ritual pyramid text: “A stairway to the sky is set up for me that I may ascend on it to the sky. And I ascend on the sense of the great sensing, frankincense.”

Of all the ancient scripture oils, frankincense has the greatest story and the longest history-widely regarded as the most powerful aromatic substance in ancient times. The writings of Ptolemy comment that the small fragments that crumble off of the worked frankincense lumps as well as the frankincense dust and powder were called manna.

Many other medicinal uses of frankincense throughout the ages appear in ancient records. The early physicians described the properties of frankincense as being hot, dry, astringent, detergent, and extractant. Childbirth was protected by fumigation of frankincense and fresh frankincense was traditionally used in poultices and plasters to treat a wide variety of skin lesions. The gum was made into pills to treat thinning of blood and of abdominal and chest pain, cholera, and a wide variety of problems.

Frankincense mixtures were claimed to cure all known ails and to be an antidote to all known poisons. Frankincense was thought to be very good for the healing of bone fractures and it was also thought to aid conception. Even the pollen was prescribed in a remedy for gout, and the buds and the berries for the cleansing of an infected throat. However, no modern studies have yet investigated the validity of these claims.

Essentially Yours,
Gary Young

Ways To Use Frankincense

Diffuse

In diffuser therapy, Frankincense can be used for congestion and voice loss, as well as to calm the mind, reduce mental strain, cultivate internal peace, and place past obsessive states into perspective.

Choose one of these types of diffusers when diffusing Frankincense as to not spoil the therapeutic benefits of this lovely essential oil.

Tip: never dilute an essential oil with a carrier oil when using the cold-air nebulizer Essential Oil Diffuser, and never use a diffuser that disperses by means of heat.

There are only a couple of days left to take advantage of the December special if you want a Travel Fan Diffuser, see details in the ‘left’ column.

Massage

Blend with V-6 Massage Oil. Use 2-4 drops per teaspoon on V-6.

Frankincense can be blended with massage oil or diluted in the bath for circulatory support, respiratory support, exhaustion, and nightmares.

Frankincense has a good astringent effect on the skin; perks up older, more mature skin; and may assist the body in healing itself of wounds, sores, and ulcers.

Essential Oils for Massage and Bodywork

Some of my favorite Home Spa Recipes and Tips

Bath

Mix with 1/2 cup Sea Salt or Epsom Salts in bath or foot bath water.

Mix several drops of Frankincense with YL Bath & Shower Gel Base for a shower gel or a bubble bath.

Creams and Lotions

Frankincense can be added to a base cream or lotion to help with general skin tone and condition while reducing oily skin, rejuvenating more mature skin, and at the same time helping wounds, ulcers, and sores heal.

Many add a couple of drops to their Boswellia Wrinkle Cream in their palm and gently dab onto face and neck for an added boost to help smooth wrinkles.

Wash or use as a compress

To assist the body in healing and to lessen the appearance of scars from wounds, add a few drops of Frankincense to the water when washing a wound. For other applications, apply diluted with V-6 directly onto the affected area or use as a compress.

Power Up Your Immune System with Thieves and ImmuPower Essential Oils

December 6, 2009 in Application, Aromatherapy, Best Essential Oils, Cinnamon Oil, Clove, Disinfectant, Essential Oils, How do I use, Natural Health, Using Essential Oils, Wellness, Young Living Essential Oils by Evelyn Vincent | No comments

For an immune system boost, many like to use an alternating method of application of  Young Living Thieves and ImmuPower essential oil blends. In the morning, applying 2-3 drops of one of these essential oils to the soles of the feet with a little V-6 Massage Oil. At bedtime, apply 2-3 drops of the other essential oil with a little V-6 Massage Oil.

In addition, mixing 2-3 drops of either Thieves or ImmuPower, with one Tablespoon V-6, and then apply to the spine, rubbing briskly up and down the spine. After applying, cup hands over the nose (without touching eyes) and inhale deeply for 2-3 minutes.

Diffusing Thieves or ImmuPower

Thieves and ImmuPower can also be diffused alternately to help kill cold and flu organisms in the air. Put 20-30 drops of Thieves in a diffuser, diffuse for 30-60 minutes twice a day (morning and evening – if your diffuser does not have a timer one can be found at a local hardware store, the same kind of timer you would use for lamps. The following day, add 20-30 drops of ImmuPower to your diffuser, and run for 30-60 minutes morning and evening.

Make a spray bottle of either Thieves or ImmuPower to keep in the bathroom and kitchen to help eliminate odors and kill germs…

How to make a Thieves or ImmuPower Spray

In a 14 oz. spray bottle filled with water 7/8 of the way full, add 20-30 drops of Thieves or ImmuPower, shake, and sprtiz, allowing any spray mist on surfaces to air dry. This is also good for spritzing: doorknobs, light switches, phones, and keyboards – at home or work!

The Twelve Days of Christmas the Fourth Day

December 4, 2009 in Biblical Oils, Diffusing, Frankincense, Meditation, Skin Care, Young Living Essential Oils by Jonell Elder | No comments

On the fourth day of Christmas Young Living scent to me 4 Frankincense, 3 Wise Men, 2 NingXia Reds and a bottle of Lavender oil.

What a blessing to receive Young Livings  Frankincense!! The immense wonders of Frankincense and the knowing that it was given to the Christ Child because of its healing ways is an oil that everyone should have in their home.

Frankincense is one of the oldest essential oils and is used primarily in meditation to improve one’s inner balance. Frankincense, Boswellia carteri, is also known as “olibanum,” or “oil from Lebanon.” Considered the “holy anointing oil” in the Middle East, frankincense has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. It was well known during the time of Christ and was one of the gifts given to Christ at his birth. Anciently, the Chinese used frankincense as a treatment for a range of ailments. Today, frankincense is still used worldwide for both its ceremonial and medicinal use.

Frankincense can be used topically, as a dietary supplement, or diffused. Frankincense can ease many minor aches and pains, clear the lungs, act as a skin tonic, as well as calm and soothe the whole body and mind. Frankincense also contains sesquiterpenes which stimulate the limbic system of the brain-the center of memory and emotions-and the hypothalamus, pineal, and pituitary glands.*

Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) has a sweet, warm, balsamic aroma that is stimulating and elevating to the mind. Useful for visualizing, improving one’s spiritual connection, and centering, it has comforting properties that help focus the mind and overcome stress and despair.  More recently, it has been used in European and American hospitals and is the subject of substantial research. Frankincense is also a valuable ingredient in skin care products for aging and dry skin. The ancient Egyptians used it in rejuvenation face masks.

The History

Frankincense has been associated with spirituality since earliest antiquity, and the Frankincense tree is the oldest story tree in the world, with legends dating back (in recorded history) to 3,000 B.C. Some stories say frankincense date back to 10,000 B.C. but there aren’t any writings dating back that far.

In 3,000 B.C. Frankincense had more value than gold. There was only one other thing that had more value than Frankincense and that, however, wasn’t gold – and that oil was Balsam. Interestingly, research from Israel suggests Balsam oil was called “gold.”

The researchers who found these latest scrolls and translations are saying now it might have been Balsam oil, Frankincense and Myrrh that was brought to the Christ Child – and not frankincense, myrrh and the metal gold. Frankincense, Myrrh and Balsam were very commonly used throughout the regions, and Balsam grew on the inland north slopes of southern Arabia, north of where the Frankincense trees grew then and still grow today.

How To Use Frankincense

Diffuse
In diffuser therapy, frankincense can be used for congestion and voice loss, as well as to calm the mind, reduce mental strain, cultivate internal peace, and place past obsessive states into perspective.*

It also has a good astringent effect on the skin; perks up older, more mature skin; and may assist the body in healing itself of wounds, sores, and ulcers.*

Creams and lotions Frankincense can be added to a “quality” base cream or lotion to help with general skin tone and condition while reducing oily skin, rejuvenating more mature skin, and at the same time helping wounds, ulcers, and sores to heal.*

Wash or use as a compress To assist the body in healing and to lessen the appearance of scars from wounds, add a few drops of frankincense to the water when washing a wound. For other applications, apply diluted oil directly onto the affected area or use as a compress.*
