Emotions of Deployment Day
by Beau Miakinkoff
Many spouses and the members of the families of the men and women that serve this nation endure high emotional stresses in the weeks and days leading up to deployment day.
My son is in the Navy and as a mom, I am not immune to the stresses of the constant worry about his safety, the well-being of the entire crew, the soundness and protection provided by the boat to keep our men out of harms way, and above all the speedy delivery of our men to return home and be reunited into the arms of those that love them and miss them. On top of that, I worry about the well-being of my son’s wife and his child that he has had to leave behind and how they are faring and coping on their own. This is a lot on a person’s mind for months and months on end.
Today, I am compelled to share some uses of essential oils that may help to ease this anxiety building up to the day of deployment, the loneliness felt after they have been deployed, and the long wait for the return home of our men. I know this is not a substitute for missing our men, but it will help you to cope with these emotions and allow you to carry on with your daily responsibilities here at home while they are out at sea.
These can all be diffused into the air throughout your home or confined to one room to make it your sanctuary. I recommend a diffuser that does not require heat or the flame of a candle to disperse the healing, soothing properties of these essential oils. It is also beneficial to carry some in a personal essential oil amulet round your neck and anytime you need it, just take a deep breath of your favorite fragrance to help restore balance.

With having 118 MHz, it has the highest influences emotionally and spiritually by promoting consciousness, health, love, peace and a general sense of well-being.
Melissa means “Elixir of Life”. Anciently this oil was used for nervous disorders and many different ailments dealing with the heart or the emotions. It has a delightful lemony scent. Is excellent for balancing the emotions. It is calming, uplifting and may help remove emotional blocks and instill a positive outlook on life. (a wonderful support to to both body and mind)
Neroli is another absolute extraction and is quite intoxifying (personal experience). Traditionally regarded by Egyptians for healing the mind, body and spirit. This oil is a natural tranquilizer and has powerful psychological effects. It encourages confidence, courage, joy, peace brings relief to seemingly hopeless situations.
Onycha is in my opinion truly a gift from the gods. It sited in the Bible as one of the ingredients for an “Holy Anointing Oil” and has been used for thousands of years in rituals and ceremonies. It is warming and soothing to the heart. According to Marguerite Maury: “This essence created a kind of euphoria; it interposes a padded zone between us and events.” It may also help overcome sadness, loneliness, depression, and anxiety. Combine it with Rose and it can be very comforting and uplifting. (Note: this is a thick oil. Best recommendations is to thin it heavily with lavender or peppermint oils for diffusion)
Orange folklore has it that it was associated with generosity and gratitude. It effects the human body by balancing emotions. Orange brings peace and happiness to the mind and body and joy to the heart, which provide emotional support to overcome depression.
Palo Santo is considered a “Holy Wood” just like Sandalwood and has been used by the Amazons in rituals and ceremonies for the purification and cleansing of evil spirits, misfortunes and calamity. It’s aromatic energy use is beneficial for calming and soothing and rendering emotional balance. It may help to increase spiritual awareness and focus meditation while clearing the space of negative energy.
Patchouli (a blast from the past!) is sedating, calming and relaxing allowing it to reduce anxiety. It is also very healing as it is a “digester of toxic material in the body” and may help with headaches, tension and stress.

Vetiver is calming, grounding and sedative. It is known as the “oil of tranquility”. This oil may help the sufferings of anxiety, insomnia, extreme nervousness, stress. It has a heavy, smokey, earthy fragrance similar to patchouli with lemon-like undertones.
Ylang Ylang properties of being an anti-depressant, sedative and tonic lend it to be useful for helping with feelings of anxiety, lowering blood pressure, soothing frustrations. The fragrance is a very sweet heady floral aroma and many find it sickenly sweet (myself included). I find it helpful to cut the headiness with a lighter fragrance such as lemongrass, or tangeringe or lavender. Ylang Ylang can restore emotional balance. It may help with anger and possibly rage, low self-esteem and bring back feelings of self-love, confidence, joy and peace.
